Get your boats, rods and reels, bait and tackle ready because the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFTA) is hosting a Summer Flounder Tournament on June 8th at Viking Yachting Center. The tournament, which organizers hope to one day refer to as the "Bass River Classic" commences at sunrise, with final weigh-in ranging from 1:00pm until 4:00pm and an awards ceremony with door prizes beginning at 5:00pm. All of the proceeds from the Summer Flounder Tournament will benefit RFA and the Tuckerton Seaport & Museum. The event will have cash prizes totaling $2,000 for the boats placing first, second and third, judged by the combined weight of the heaviest two summer flounder or fluke! There will also be a prize for the single heaviest flounder caught during the contest and special awards, including a Lamiglas rod with reel combo and special trophies for younger fisherman, 12 and under. Hurry, though! Time is running out to get your boat in the contest with an entry fee of $75. The deadline is May 24th. However, if your boat is registered after May 24th, the fee is $90, but that still includes a t-shirt for the captain and four wristbands for the captain and crew to attend the celebrations taking place Friday and Saturday night at Breeze's Bar & Grill. The High Point Volunteer Fire Company's annual Chicken Dinner is scheduled for May 25. The dinner will take place at the High Point Firehouse, located at 10 West and 80th Street in Harvey Cedars. Takeout begins at 2:00pm and a traditional, sit-down dinner is served from 4:00pm until 8:00pm. All are welcome and all of the proceeds will benefit the High Point Volunteer Fire Company. May 18th - 24th is National Safe Boating Week! Every year maritime rescue agencies throughout the United States take time to provide mariners with some general safety reminders prior to the kick off of the anticipated boating season. Following last years success, the water rescue crews from Beach Haven Fire Department, Barnegat Light Fire Department and US Coast Station Barnegat Light joined forces to improve their response to such incidents. Together the three agencies will provide assistance to people using our waterways including Barnegat Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and our local Beaches. Beach Haven and Barnegat Light Fire Departments equipped with Personal Watercraft can launch within minutes after notification from the beach and directly into the area of the distressed mariners. It takes a team of professional people to make these rescues successful and all are volunteers which make it happened. Each Fire Department is called out several times a year mainly after the local life guards have gone home.

Be sure to boat in safety this year by participating in the complementary Vessel Safety Check, which will be conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 7 Southern Ocean County in honor of National Safe Boating Week. This drive-through Vessel Safety Check taking place on May 25 from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm will be conveniently placed in two locations; The Barnegat Township Municipal Boat Ramp, on 411 E. Bay Avenue in Barnegat and the Ship Bottom Municipal Boat Ramp, on 10th St. & the Bay, in Ship Bottom. Event Description:
2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sailing of the luxury liner RMS Titanic. This winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score is based on the true story of the great ship's maiden voyage from departure in Southampton, England to the sinking in the Atlantic by an iceberg. Issues such as class, immigration and mankind's vulnerability in the face of nature are the focus of the show. The story follows passengers and crew members who actually existed and were aboard the Titanic back in 1912. The magnificently beautiful score includes How Did They Build the Titanic?, To Be a Captain and To The Lifeboats.
