May 18th - 24th is National Safe Boating Week! Every year maritime rescue agencies throughout the United States take time to provide mariners with some general safety reminders prior to the kick off of the anticipated boating season. Following last years success, the water rescue crews from Beach Haven Fire Department, Barnegat Light Fire Department and US Coast Station Barnegat Light joined forces to improve their response to such incidents. Together the three agencies will provide assistance to people using our waterways including Barnegat Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and our local Beaches. Beach Haven and Barnegat Light Fire Departments equipped with Personal Watercraft can launch within minutes after notification from the beach and directly into the area of the distressed mariners. It takes a team of professional people to make these rescues successful and all are volunteers which make it happened. Each Fire Department is called out several times a year mainly after the local life guards have gone home.

Pictured in the front row, BM3 Andrew Groth, BM1 Jared Meloro, BM2 Steven Endicott , US Coast Guard, back row: Bob Selfridge, Barnegat Light Water Rescue, BM1 Ben Corbisiero USCG, Dave Voris, Barnegat Light Fire Department, BMC Paul Ashley USCG, CWO Jay Greiner USCG and Matt Letts, Beach Haven Fire Department. The men and women of the US Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light operate three different types of small boat ranging from 24' Special Water/Shallow Craft, 25' Response Boat , and 47' Motor Lifeboats and respond to a variety of marine that occur in the Barnegat Bay or up to 50 nautical miles off shore. The proper wearing of life jackets can save your life but only if you are wearing it! Visit the Safe Boating Council website for more information.

In the aftermath of Sandy, contractors of all kinds will invariably be coming to the area seeking to perform work. We are asking everyone to be careful when dealing with an unknown contractor. It is recommended that you be sure the contractor is registered with the State of New Jersey. Get a written and signed contract from the contractor before any work is performed. Do not pay by cash or with a check written to "cash", instead make the check out to the company name. DO NOT pay the entire amount up front, pay an agreed upon portion then pay in full when the work is completed.
